Norway's football history contains one World Cup quarterfinal, in 1938, and a long subsequent absence from the world's biggest tournament. They failed to qualify for every World Cup from 1998 to 2022. Their 2026 qualification was celebrated in Oslo as an achievement in itself. The idea that they would reach the Round of 16 — eliminating Scotland in the knockout stage — was not part of any reasonable pre-tournament prediction.
Erling Haaland has made reasonable predictions redundant.
The Group Stage
Norway finished second in Group I behind France, which tells you everything about the group and nothing about how comfortable the journey was. France won all three matches; Norway won two and drew one. Their 2-1 win over Senegal on July 21 was tight and nervous. Their 2-0 win over Iraq in the final group match — Haaland hat-trick, two goals in six minutes — was the statement performance that turned Norway from a team that had qualified from their group into one that looked capable of something more significant.
Haaland finished the group stage with four goals. His positioning, movement and clinical finishing have been what you would expect from the world's best striker in his prime. What was less expected was the collective defensive organisation around him — Norway's back line held France to one goal in their group opener and conceded only twice across three matches. That organisation, not Haaland alone, is why they are in the Round of 16.
The Round of 32: Scotland 1-2 Norway
Scotland qualified as one of the best third-place teams from Group C, behind Brazil and Morocco, and were considered by most analysts to be the safer draw for the established Round of 16 contenders. They were not safe. Norway pressed aggressively from the opening whistle at Lumen Field. Scotland scored first — a 22nd-minute breakaway that made Norway's path to the Round of 16 suddenly feel uncertain. Haaland's equaliser came from a set piece in the 51st minute and was the most technically straightforward goal of his tournament: free kick delivered, Haaland rising above the defence, ball in the net. His second, in the 78th minute, was a different proposition: a first-time finish from a cross that required both excellent timing and the kind of coolness under pressure that separates world-class strikers from everyone else.
What Faces Them Against Spain
Spain are the heaviest favourites in the Round of 16. Lamine Yamal at 18 years old has been the tournament's most technically gifted player. Spain's midfield controls matches in a way Norway's cannot match. The logical prediction is a comfortable Spain victory. The historical prediction, before July 8, was that Norway would not reach the Round of 16 in the first place. Haaland against Spain's high defensive line is a matchup worth watching regardless of the result.
